Technion: The most important science institution of Israel

Established on April 11, 1912, and located in Haifa, Israel, The Israel Institute of Technology – Technion, is the major science and engineering university there and one of the most important educative institutions in the world. This university was founded in what was the Ottoman Empire, making the institution oldest than the state of Israel and the first university in the country.

Technion is well-known for its work in fields like energy, biotechnology, space science and nanotechnology. Besides these study fields, the institution offers programs in other science areas and engineering disciplines such as medicine and computer science. Technion has 18 faculties and offers 50 career courses. It has more than 10 affiliate hospitals for its medicine programs and more than 50 research centers. In its entire history, the Technion has graduated more than 100,000 students.

The institution has multiple associations with other universities in United States, Canada, China, Japan, Australia, India, United Kingdom, South Korea, Brazil, Chile, among other countries. These alliances involve important institutions like Yale or Cambridge University. It also has alliances with different companies around the world like Microsoft.

Notable graduates

Dan Shechtman

He was born on 1941, in Tel Aviv. Shechtman did a Ph.D. in materials engineering at the Technion University in 1972. He also studied there his mastery in sciences and mechanical engineering in 1966. Since 1975 he was incorporated to the materials engineering program as a professor in Technion. Shechtman also worked at the Johns Hopkins University and in the Aerospace Investigation Lab of the air base Wright-Patterson, located in Ohio, United States.

Working at Johns Hopkins University, he proposed the existence of quasicrystals elements, after his working with aluminum alloys. For this investigation, he was awarded in 2011 with the Nobel Prize.

Aaron Ciechanover

Aaron Ciechanover was born in Haifa, Israel in 1947. He graduated from medicine at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in 1974. After his medicine studies, Aaron did a Ph. D. in Biology at Technion in 1982. Currently, he manages The Rappaport Investigation Institute in Technion.

In 2004 Aaron Ciechanover and Avram Hershko were awarded the chemistry Nobel Prize for their research about protein degradation. In 2000, Aaron received the Lasker Award for his medicine research. Besides his current work as director of the Rappaport Institute in Technion, he has worked on the board of different science companies around the world.

Arieh Warshel

Arieh Warshel was born on 1940, in Sde Nahum, Israel. He is physicochemical who in 2013 received the Nobel Prize in the company of Michael Levitt and Martin Karplus for the development of a predictive informatics software for complex chemical process behavior.

He graduated from Technion in chemistry on 1966 and three years later he gets his Ph.D. in physical chemistry at the Weizmann Sciences Institute. Some years later he joined the chemistry department at The University of Southern California as a professor.

His research about the chemical process was very useful for the developing of software that works understanding the different chemical process, simulating the behavior of its reactions.

Amir Pnueli

Amir Pnueli was born on 1941 in Nahalal, Israel and died on 2009 in New York, United States. He was a computer scientist that studied Math in Technion. Years later, he graduated with a Ph.D. in mathematics at the Weizmann Institute of Science. Pnueli also studied at the Stanford University. In 1999 he moved to the Computer Sciences Department at the New York University.

In 1996 Pnueli was awarded the Turing Award for his investigation in the temporal logic in computer science.

Avram Hershko

Avram Hershko was born in Karcag, Hungary in 1937. He graduated from medicine at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in 1965 and completed a Ph.D. in Biology in this University in 1969. Before making his Ph. D., Hershko worked as a physicist in the Israel Defense Forces. Currently, he works as a professor in Technion and in the New York University.

In 2004, in the company of Aaron Ciechanover (Mentioned above), he awarded the Nobel Prize for his investigation about protein degradation.

Yaron Brook

He was born in 1961, Israel. Brook graduated from Civil Engineering at Technion in 1986. One year later, he moved to the United States to study an MBA and a Ph.D. in finance at the University of Texas. Yaron Brook before his studies served as Sergeant in the Israeli military intelligence. Some years later, after his studies, he worked as a financial advisory. Presently, Brook works as the president of Ayn Rand Institute in California, which is a writing non-profit organization. This company works promoting Ayn Rand novelties.

Technion Institution is one of the most important universities in Israel and in the world. It has graduated some of the most brilliant people around the planet in different science areas, which have contributed to the creation of a better society and the construction of a better world.
